American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS)
American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus provides accurate information about a wide range of eye diseases and some of the other conditions that can affect the eyes. Topics can be superficial, but there are some links to more detailed information. The site is recommended for it's useful resources for children with eye disease and as a starting place for relevant and accurate information.
The important site tools are accessible easily from the homepage. The category tab "Patient Info" contains an alphabetical list of eye terms and conditions. The site may also be searched from the homepage by typing into a search bar, or by "most common searches." Pages are organized consistently with purple subheadings and small black text font.
Brightly colored site logo and tools on the homepage are appealing. However, lots of different colors and fonts make the homepage seem cluttered. Crisp clinical images and diagrams add some visual diversity to the text pages.
AAPOS is a highly regarded organization that uses evidence-based information to establish practice guidelines for pediatric ophthalmology. Unfortunately there is no documentation this approach is carried over into the patient education content. There is useful and relevant information about children's eye diseases, although much of it is cursory with some being just brief definitions. Nonetheless, is made authoritative due to some referencing and a qualified editorial board of pediatric ophthalmologists.
AAPOS members comprise the editorial board for this site and the last person to update the topic is listed. Review dates on some topics more than 2 years ago should make users question whether the content reflects current thinking.
